Haarlem vs Amsterdam: where should expats live?

Haarlem vs Amsterdam: where should expats live?

Comparing two great Dutch cities for international residents

5 min read

Amsterdam is magnetic, but it comes at a cost. Haarlem, just 20 kilometres to the west, offers much of the same quality of life at a lower price point and with a more human scale. Here is an honest comparison to help you decide.

Cost of living and property prices

Property in Amsterdam averages significantly higher than in Haarlem. For the same budget you can get a larger apartment or a family home with a garden in Haarlem compared to a studio in Amsterdam. Rental prices follow a similar pattern. For expats on a relocation budget, this is a meaningful difference, especially over a multi-year stay.

Daily costs (groceries, dining out, transport) are slightly lower in Haarlem too, though not dramatically. The biggest financial gap is in housing.

Commute and connectivity

Haarlem to Amsterdam Centraal takes approximately 15 to 17 minutes by direct train, with trains running every 10 minutes during peak hours. Schiphol Airport is even closer, roughly a 10-minute train journey. The commute concern is often overstated; many expats find the train journey shorter and more pleasant than navigating Amsterdam traffic.

Quality of life

Haarlem consistently ranks as one of the most liveable cities in the Netherlands. It has a thriving food and arts scene, excellent cycling infrastructure, beaches at Zandvoort just 12 minutes away, and a historic city centre that rivals Amsterdam in beauty. Without the crowds or the tourist pressure.

Daily life feels calmer. Restaurants are easier to book, the streets are less crowded, and the pace is more relaxed without sacrificing urban amenities.

International schools and facilities

Several international schools are accessible from Haarlem, including options in Amsterdam and the broader Bollenstreek region. Many expat families find this perfectly manageable. For secondary schooling, the British School of Amsterdam and the Amsterdam International Community School are within reasonable reach.

Social life and expat community

Amsterdam has a larger expat community simply by virtue of its size. But Haarlem has a growing, close-knit international scene with networking events, cafes that operate in English, and active Facebook groups. Many expats find Haarlem easier to integrate into socially because the city is smaller and more accessible.

Our recommendation

If you work in Amsterdam or at Schiphol and value space, character and value for money, Haarlem is hard to beat. If your work and social life is deeply embedded in Amsterdam itself and you do not mind the housing premium, Amsterdam may still be the right call. For most families and many singles, Haarlem offers the better lifestyle balance.
